The War on Drugs

While the headlines are filled with news of the fighting in Iraq a separate war is being quietly fought right here on our own soil. It’s a war that’s been going on for over 30 years now with very little, if any progress. Billions and billions of dollars are being spent each year on this war leading to nearly 1.7 million arrests. Of those 1.7 million nearly 50% are for marijuana, most for simple possession. Meanwhile a couple of legal drugs, alcohol & tobacco remain as two of the leading causes of death in America. So, the question is…Is it socially responsible to spend all this money and make all of these arrest for a drug like marijuana when two of the leading killers in the U.S. are available on every corner? Well let’s compare some numbers from 2004 to get our answer.

Deaths in motor vehicle crashes………………….16,694 alcohol related
Injuries in motor vehicle crashes………………….248,000 alcohol related
Murders……………………………………………50% alcohol related
Firearm related deaths……………………………..43% alcohol related
Domestic abuse…………………………………….57% alcohol related
"Suiciders"…………………………………………….50% alcohol related

Residential Fire Deaths.................................43% alcohol related

And the list could go on & on; drunk boaters, swimmers, college kids & alcohol poisoning, rapes, armed robbery, homelessness, broken homes, dreams, & careers.

After getting all of those numbers I researched the same topics but for a correlation with Marijuana rather than alcohol. Know what I found...nothing. Nothing at all except for the overwhelming number of people who are arrested for it.

Tobbaco, the #1 killer claimed 442,398 lives in 2004 alone. NEARLY A HALF A FUCKING MILLION PEOPLE A YEAR!!!

And despite all of these lives lost or ruined we do nothing...But in the case of Marijuana with it's most harmful effect being an unsatisfiable desire for candy we label approximately 750,000 people a year with a permanent criminal record.
